How to Become a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) in 2026
The Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation is the gold standard in the financial advice industry. It signals to clients that you have met rigorous education, examination, and ethical standards.
The 4 E's of Certification
To become a CFP, you must complete four main requirements:
1. Education
You must complete a CFP Board-registered education program (university-level coursework on investment, tax, retirement, and estate planning). You also need a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university (in any discipline).
2. Examination
Pass the rigorous CFP Exam. It is a 6-hour, 170-question computer-based test that assesses your ability to apply financial planning knowledge to real-life situations. The pass rate is typically around 60-65%.
3. Experience
You need 6,000 hours of professional experience related to the financial planning process, or 4,000 hours of apprenticeship experience.
4. Ethics
Candidates must agree to adhere to the CFP Board's Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct and pass a background check.
